Good to know
- A fire near a refinery is not a fire at it: 50 km is wide and many detections are farm or brush burns. We do not say what caused any fire.
- The fire history starts on the day we began collecting (satellites give only the last 7 days at a time) and grows every day.
- Refinery and pipeline maps are EIA layers dated 2020-2021. Natural gas pipelines are left out on purpose: most fire detections in the US lie within 50 km of the gas grid.
- The Gulf threat level is a simple rule of ours (storm inside the Gulf box, near Gulf Coast refineries, or named in the NHC outlook), not an NHC product.
